Working with HLI

Work with us

We have opportunities for:

Host Families

Would you like an additional income? Would you like to help foreign students improve their language skills in a friendly home environment?

If you have a spare room in your house you can be very well paid (depending on the number of hours you are required to teach) simply by accommodating and teaching students from 1 - 4 weeks, predominantly during the school holidays.

We are currently looking for highly educated hosts who have a university degree (any academic subject) and a minimum 2 years' teaching experience or who have a teaching certificate recognised by the state or teachers who are already in full-time employment and can teach during the holidays or who are working part-time or are retired and can teach on a flexible part/full-time basis.

Job Description

HLI are the outstanding leaders in Home Stay Language teaching, operating in 30 countries throughout the world. We are currently seeking further tutors to host and teach foreign students.

The high quality of our tutors and the professionalism they bring are crucial in achieving this success. We find our host teachers from various different situations. You might be self-employed and working from home, or a teacher looking for extra work in the holidays, perhaps retired or at home with the children.

Some tutors choose to work all year round, others work only during school holidays. Once you have been accepted, you may choose when you want to work. You are free to accept or turn down each student you are offered, for any reason you like. We have a steady stream of students throughout the year, not only during the summer.

What does the job involve?

Having a student live with you (usually 1 - 4 weeks) during which time they will be treated as a member of your family and typically receive 15 hours of formal language lessons per week, taught on a one-to-one basis. You will also provide 3 meals a day for the student. Sometimes the students opt for activities instead of lessons for some part of their course.

Requirements for Tutor Homes

You will have a well-maintained home in a good location with reasonable access to shops, buses, trains, library and other local facilities. You will have a bedroom for the student with bed, wardrobe and a chest of drawers. These are for the student's use and must not be filled up with family clutter.

We are especially interested in hearing from families in the following areas:

  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • UK: Bath, Bristol
  • USA: New England

Local Organisers

What is Home Language International?

We organise for students to live and study in their private teacher's home. We organise these courses in over 30 countries, 110 regions and have a local representative in each region. We work with agencies throughout the world who send us approximately 4,000 students a year.

What does a Local Organiser do?

  • recruits host families
  • sends the necessary paperwork to the families/students
  • assigns a family when HLI sends a booking
  • organises transport for the student to/from the airport if required
  • calls the students during their course to make sure they are happy and are receiving the required number of lessons

Why be a Local Organiser?

  • earn an additional income
  • being a local organiser does not take up much of your time - most of our representatives continue working or hosting students
  • no fixed hours - you choose when to do your work phoning students or visiting teachers

If you would like to have an informal discussion to learn more about this opportunity please please contact us with your details.

Presently we are expanding our worldwide Agent network to promote and sell our courses.

What is an agent?

An agent is either an individual, a small organisation or a very large concern. The link that distinguishes them all is the fact that they send us students on a commission basis.

We obtain 95% of our business (more than 4000 students per year) through agents of all types and sizes and the commission can vary from 20% for individuals to 25% for professional agencies and even more for those who send 50 students or more in a year. Typical agents are retired school teachers, travel agents or purely scholastic agencies but anyone with suitable contacts is welcome to join our team if they can come up with the goods!

If you are an individual please do not regard this invitation to join us as a job application as you will be paid entirely on a commission basis and this will not give you sufficient income to live on unless you send a large number of students.

It will however provide you with a worthwhile and substantial second income stream. REMEMBER THAT WE VIEW OUR AGENTS AS OUR CUSTOMERS as most of our students are recommended to us by our agents who are therefore treasured by us as vital to our organisation.

All this is a personal note from me to you and I personally, with the rest of the HLI team wish you the best of luck if you do decide to join in our efforts not only to run a successful business, but also by mutual exchange to promote international understanding.

Yours sincerely, Ian Josephs and the HLI team
